Oh, the irony.

Here’s a few commemorative 50p coins we’ve had in the past:
  • 1973 - The UK's accession to the European Economic Community
  • 1992 - The UK's Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the completion of the Single European Market
  • 1998 - The UK's Presidency of the European Union, and the 25th Anniversary of the UK's accession to the European Economic Community

The coin will be inscribed with the phrase: “Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations.” Ironic, given that we are leaving an institution that basically embodies these values:
Article 2: of the Treaty on European Union:
The Union is founded on the values of respect for human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and respect for human rights, including the rights of persons belonging to minorities. These values are common to the Member States in a society in which pluralism, non-discrimination, tolerance, justice, solidarity and equality between women and men prevail.
Article 3-1 of the Treaty on European Union:
The Union's aim is to promote peace, its values and the well-being of its peoples.

And to top it all off:

Is it just me who thinks we should only make commemorative coins when there is something worth celebrating?
